If you take the stairs directly in front of you, you’ll reach Blockhouse #1, now home to the video installation, “La penna e la baionetta” (“The Pen and the Bayonet”), dedicated to some of the famous writers who participated in the Great War in this area. If you take the stairs down and to your right you will head back towards the exit, ending your visit. We will leave you with the words of Fritz Weber taken from the book "Stages of the defeat"
“A great silence now reigns on the plateau. Columns of infantrymen climb the streets that for long months we saw desolate and lonely. The change is so paradoxical that it is difficult not to believe it is a dream. The hatred, which dominated us in the last few days, has vanished. For us, who were forced to live without interruption for a whole year in that pit of concrete and steel, the advance represented an indescribable relief. Later I knew the war in almost all its aspects, but no one, for its desolation and for the grueling wear to which the nerves were subjected, for the valor and the very high morale that distinguished the soldiers, can compare to the life we led in the forts.”
