On the eastern bank of the River Atérno, the ancient Vestìno people of Abruzzo founded a necropolis of grave-mounds, pits and stones.
In this city of the dead, frequented for many centuries from the Iron Age to Hellenistic times, passing time can be discerned directly on the rocks. The oldest tombs are made of mounds of earth and stones, and the graves of the men are heralded by rows of stones driven into the ground, decreasing in height.
The more recent burials are housed in large stone chamber tombs, almost all underground and plastered over. Until the arrival of archaeologists, many of them contained precious funeral beds with carved bone and ivory applications, precious catafalques for display after death and eternal sleep.
Long, flat cattle and horse bones were carved to become precious symbols of the aristocracy.
