Two elephants sway across this plate, standing out against the dark background thanks to the overpainting technique used. After the black overpainted pottery was fired, an artisan added orange, dark red and white strokes.
He created new forms and light-carrying matter, bodies of animals and stylized ivy leaves emerging from the dark. He added revealing although hazy details. The soldiers in the tower, their faces indistinct but whose ferocious expression is clear.
The two crooked lines that map out the floor underfoot. The trunk of the small pachyderm tenderly enlaced in the tail of the larger animal.
