Poseidònia was founded by the Sybarites on the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea. At the end of the 7th century BC they moved from Calabria, sailing as far as the coast of Campania.
Here they built a new town, with its main square – the agorà – and shrines dedicated to the gods that still soar skywards on the Capaccio plain. Two centuries later they were replaced by new rulers, offspring of the Lucanian populations that had settled the hinterland before them.
In a town where the Òscan and Greek languages were both in use, a new school of artisans flourished and painted stunning vases, but also decorated in bright colours the stone tombs of the aristocracy.
In 273 BC, Poseidònia fell under the attack of Rome.
The town became a colony and changed its name to Paestum.
