Padua University students fought in many a war since the nineteenth century. Here and in the nearby Cortile Nuovo their sacrifice is solemnly remembered.
The bronze door was made by melting the cannons taken from the enemy during the First World War. It shuts out the noise of the city to protect the names of the 116 victims who lost their lives during another World War, the second. Among them was the partisan commander Primo Visentin who had graduated in Padua, to whom is dedicated Palinuro, the statue of Arturo Martini in the centre of the entrance hall.
Spirits are lightened by the Scala del Sapere designed by architect Gio Ponti, with steps in colored marble and a fresco celebrating the Growth of Humanity through culture.
The door at the top of the staircase opens into the University of Padua’s Rectorate. Indeed, Palazzo del Bo continues to be a lively point of reference for the University, albeit in full respect of its centuries-old structure.
For this reason, the Rectorate can only be visited on weekends. Do not worry though, if you are here on a weekday you can rediscover Gio Ponti’s genius at Palazzo Liviano.
