Are you able to make out the Trodena Line by looking at the ground?

Because of their different geological characteristics, the vegetation growing on the porphyry rock of Corno Nero is very different from that growing on the Dolomia rock of Corno Bianco.

Look around: in winter, with the snow, it could be difficult but if it’s spring or summer, you should be able to see that the vegetation around you is not all the same.

On Corno Bianco - to your right looking north - there are calcareous rocks and scree. The soil is fairly dry: vegetation is made up of bushes of mugo pine (Pinus mugo), or of hairy alpenrose (Rhododendron hirsutum) and of plants like the silvery yarrow (Achillea of Clavennae).

On Corno Nero - to your left - the soil is instead rather fresh. The area is not too exposed to the elements, and water is retained within the soil. There are mixed conifer forests of spruce, larch and Swiss pine.

In the undergrowth there are bushes of rusty-leaved alpenrose (Rhododendron ferrugineum) and various types of moss. The alpine prairies on Corno Nero are thicker than those on Corno Bianco. Achillea moscata takes the place of Achillea of Clavennae and you can also find the Oreochloa disticha grass , which on Corno Bianco is nowhere to be found.
