In these showcases, let me show you, on the left, a Morse manipulator and telegraph receiver, with which messages were exchanged in the form of electrical impulses. Both these instruments were built in 1852 by Paolo Rocchetti, a mechanic at the Specola in Padua. Rocchetti also founded an important foundry in Padua, specialised in the construction of iron bridges. Two of these are still in use today near the Specola and on the San Benedetto Riviera.
Note also the two wooden telephones in the next showcase, below. They were acquired by Francesco Rossetti, professor of physics here in Padua. Rossetti was one of the first to study the telephone in Italy, and used these telephones to make the first telephone calls in the Veneto region in 1878, first between the Specola and Palazzo Bo, the seat of the Institute of Physics, and then between Padua and Venice. Rossetti recounts that one of the experimenters at the Specola sang a song: when the song stopped, one of the experimenters in Venice took it up. The communication was successful, the emotion was great!
