The hand of an unknown Late–1st–century BC sculptor left a portrait of Augustus, a snapshot of his later years. His forehead is furrowed with gentle wrinkles, his cheeks appear less full, drooping on the folds from nose to lip.
Thus the words used by Suetònius to describe the Princeps of Rome seem accurate: “he was of remarkable beauty and extremely attractive at every age, although he had no affectations of any kind. He rejoiced if someone he stared at insistently lowered their head as if facing the glare of the sun.”
