They defend themselves with shields, running away after having plundered a sanctuary and the gasping Celtic warriors can almost be heard. Exposed, they make a chaotic escape, on foot or in chariots, which forces them to abandon part of their plunder.
Vases and jugs roll in the dust and soldiers stumble over the pateras, shallow bowls used in temples during sacrifices. These are small, round decorated bowls but here, like a nightmare, they seem much bigger than the real thing.
Behind the fugitives, a host of heroes and gods advance equally impetuously. Gods and goddesses pursue the defilers and we must linger and imagine the conclusion of such an frantic chase.
