8.Basilica

Trascrizione

The Basilica, in which you are standing, is not a church: it takes its name from the typical subdivision of its space into a nave and two aisles.

Among its columns you will find the modern reconstruction of the planetary clock by Giovanni Dondi, a doctor who lived in 1300. His invention was able to reproduce the universe according to the cosmological theories of time: seven quadrants simulate the movements of the planets then known, of the fixed stars and of the Moon as seen from the Earth.

The clock was also able to calculate eclipses and religious holidays, including mobile ones - in short, it could easily tell you when the Easter and Christmas holidays will begin!
