The Hall of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery is one of the oldest spaces in Palazzo del Bo. The large frescoes on the walls date back to the mid-1900 and portray “Anatomies” on one side, and the Fame that writes the name of Morgagni in the book of History, on the other.
Giovanni Battista Morgagni was professor of anatomy in Padua in the eighteenth century and is considered the founder of modern medicine. In fact, he succeeded in demonstrating that the study of the human body was indispensable for understanding and treating diseases.
In the case at the far end of the room, you will notice some skulls: legend has it that they were donated to the University by as many professors. There is no trace, however, of such will and it is suspected that it was rather another anatomy professor, Francesco Cortese, who wanted to create a personal collection with the remains of his predecessors and colleagues, for study purposes. A little macabre, don't you think?
