9.Aula Magna

This is the Aula Magna, which literally means big classroom. Before around 1850, students learned to draw live here! Take a look at the ceiling. You can see a fresco, painted in 1854, which depicts the Knowledge and the Faculties surrounded by portraits of famous people.

Roughly a century later, the Rector Carlo Anti wanted a new podium and new chairs for the professors. He had the architect Gio Ponti design everything in 1942.

Now try to stand in the centre of the great room and to pose as the models for live drawing must have done in the past. You can take inspiration from the poses of the ceiling’s characters, and perhaps ask another member of your family to join in and complete your pose, or to take a picture!
