From the Loggiato Superiore countless painted and sculpted coats of arms are clearly visible. How many? It is said that in the whole building there are almost three thousand: you can check this by yourselves, if you fancy some counting...
The coats of arms commemorate the rectors and councillors of the University of Padua, students appointed to important public roles. Indeed, from the very start, the students made the University: organised in groups depending on their country of origin, they approved statutes, elected rectors and, most importantly, they chose the teachers.
Two courses were organised for each subject of study, scheduled on the same day and at the same time. Students were free to follow the professor they liked the best.
In 1688, the Republic of Venice decided to ban coats of arms, they were just too many! Among them there are two that are a little special - without names! They were erased because the student they commemorated, unhappy with the grade attained, killed his professor! They are on the Loggiato Superiore, can you find them?
