The University of Padua was born in 1222, when a hundred students and professors moved here from Bologna, where apparently they did not feel free enough to study.
At that time one did not need much to create a school. Students and a teacher were enough. Classes were usually held at the teacher’s house, sometimes even during the night!
Studying was not compulsory. Those few who could afford it and decided to do so, were sometimes considered... let’s say “inconvenient” by the city that hosted them. They questioned everything, asked a lot of questions, were often noisy… in short, much like when you go on a school trip!
The Commune of Padua and the governments that followed, however, managed to understand the wealth the University would bring and therefore guaranteed pupils and professors the freedom to study and live peacefully in the city.
